A No Limits Approach

Unlock the secrets to the magic of landscape painting with Surrey artist Perry Haddock (Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists).

This workshop champions a liberating approach to the landscape canvas, encouraging participants to shake off the pressure of perfection and relish the creative process.

In his workshops, Perry emphasizes the importance of fundamental artistic principles such as composition, value, and colour, while challenging students to break from rigid, precise techniques that often lead to constrained work and frustrated artists. His teaching focuses on expanding artistic freedom and expression.

". . . sometimes the anxiety of thinking we have to produce a “finished product” often results in tight drawing, tight brushwork, and slavish attention to photo sources. . . "

Perry uses teaching demos to discuss and illustrate the myriad of compositional possibilities of the canvas and highlighting specific processes. He also incorporates targeted mini-demonstrations designed to highlight specific processes or provide personalized coaching and advice on a participant's ongoing work.

Experimentation is at the heart of this workshop. Perry motivates participants to take risks that could transform their artwork, helping them to see beyond traditional methods. Attendees should bring several landscape photos to use as references, and ensure they have plenty of canvases and snacks. The majority of the time will be devoted to hands-on painting, making it a practical, engaging, and enriching experience under Perry’s guidance.

WHAT YOU"LL LEARN

Friday 6:30 - 8:30 pm

  • Opening reception and artist demo at Art on 9th (located in Invermere)

Saturday 9 am - 4 pm

  • The morning starts with a demonstration to introduce the preparation stages of developing a composition from photo references, deciding on format, preparing the ground (canvas or board), and defining initial values. One or two short exercises will accompany the demo and discussion before participants begin the day’s larger painting. The emphasis at this stage is on remaining loose, applying transparent glazes freely to lay a groundwork for later steps.

The afternoon will be spent on participants’ own paintings, with short demonstrations and one on one guidance from Perry.  The day winds up the day with a “show and tell” session and discussion about highs and lows of the day’s efforts.

Sunday  9 am - 4 pm

  • Day 2 starts with a brief discussion of the day’s flexible agenda, followed by a new demonstration, with input from the group on specific subject matter or things they’d like to see (eg. Water reflections, negative painting, etc.) We’ll also do a warm-up exercise to get the creative juices flowing.  Some may start a second painting, while others finish up from day one before moving on to a second piece. The balance of the day will be individual guidance as participants work on their own paintings. We’ll end the day with another “show and tell” to talk about everyone’s paintings and offer praise and suggestions.

Outside the Lines will help give you the confidence to loosen up and push yourself while relishing in the creative process. You'll also experience a weekend making memories, meeting new friends, and basking in the incredible beauty of Radium Hot Springs and the Columbia Valley.

As a high school teacher, I taught full time ceramics for six years, and later taught a general art class, but most of my art teaching and workshop instruction has come since my retirement, and since I moved from pottery to painting. I have done many 2-3 day workshops throughout BC over the past twenty years, as well as several 4-5 day retreats for the Federation of Canadian Artists. My experience with teaching helps me to present ideas and concepts in a way students find clear and understandable and applicable to their own work.

I find that most of my students want to spend the bulk of their time painting rather than listening to formal instruction. As a result, I like to target my “teaching” to specific and pertinent times throughout the painting process, and to respond to concerns as they come up for each painter.
