Heather Hawley

I hope that when someone looks at one of my paintings, they feel some of the same emotion they would experience if they were in nature looking at the real thing. Maybe they will even recall a favourite memory. At the end of the day, I just want to share my love for wildlife and other animals with people through my art.

Like many artists, Heather loved art from an early age. She learned a lot about art from her father, who was an accomplished commercial artist and oil painter. Although she pursued a career in law and business, her love for art never left her. Heather joined a local art group in the 1990’s and painted with them as often as she could while balancing a busy law practice and raising a family. The balance of her art education has been acquired through attendance at workshops, extensive self-directed independent study, and mentorship programs. Heather is passionate about continual learning and considers it an integral part of her lifelong journey as an artist.

Heather retired from law in 2015 and is now a full-time artist.

Heather works exclusively in oils in a realistic style. She has lived in Alberta her entire life and developed a real appreciation for nature from a very young age. She loves the varied landscapes and wildlife that Alberta has to offer – all providing wonderful inspiration for her paintings! Heather’s passion for nature is reflected in her artwork, with wildlife being her primary subject matter.
She explains: “I find it very energizing to paint wildlife. There is a real purity and simplicity with animals, and I love seeing their energy and features come to life on my canvas, especially the eyes.” While she still paints the occasional landscape, painting animals is her real passion, and she enjoys the additional technical challenge that is involved with painting wildlife.

“What draws me to a particular scene is usually dramatic lighting or colour, a strong composition or, in the case of wildlife, something that shows the character or typical behaviour of an animal. I am also finding myself drawn more and more to scenes that include water reflections, which add so much extra beauty. I find that images with one or more of those elements have the biggest emotional impact on me as the artist, and those are the ones I choose to paint,” says Heather.

Heather and her husband, Paul, live on an acreage (that includes a spacious studio) with a variety of wildlife making regular appearances, further inspiring her artistic endeavours!

Heather is represented by galleries in the US and Canada, and her work is owned by collectors in Canada, the US, Europe and Australia.
