Inside-Outside: A Plein Air & Studio Acrylic Workshop
Step into a weekend of exploration and creative growth! "Inside-Outside" is an immersive workshop led by Samantha Williams-Chapelsky that combines the spontaneity of plein air painting with the depth of studio work. Created for artists of all levels, this workshop invites you to develop new acrylic techniques and approaches in both outdoor and indoor settings, whether you’re new to the medium or looking to deepen your practice.
What You Can Expect
Begin the weekend outdoors, where you’ll dive into practical plein air techniques designed to help you simplify landscapes, capture light and movement, and master the art of composition in natural settings. Samantha’s guidance will empower you to see acrylics in a new light, enriching your approach to both landscape and narrative.
From Field to Studio
After gathering your inspiration from the outdoors, we’ll take it inside to the studio. Here, Samantha will show you how to expand one of your plein air studies into a larger, more refined piece. You’ll explore ways to convey mood and story through abstract techniques, moving beyond realistic representation. Samantha will also introduce advanced methods for using textured pastes and gels, adding a tactile quality and depth to your work.
Here's What's In Store
- Day 1: Reception and Artist Demo (held at Art on 9th in Invermere)
- Day 2: Start the day outdoors as Samantha demonstrates how to simplify scenes, create narrative depth, and master color mixing in landscape painting. Afterward, dive into your own plein air study, with Samantha offering guidance and feedback along the way. Later we'll transition into the studio to expand your work, where Samantha will cover techniques for color planning, identifying focal points, and preparing panels using methods inspired by the Group of Seven.
- Day 3: Kick off the morning with a presentation on renowned plein air artists and the role of plein air painting in conservation, then dive into quick studies focused on capturing light and form. In the afternoon, return to the studio to refine and expand your work, with Samantha’s guidance on adding texture and abstract elements to create a compelling, narrative-driven landscape.
Whether you’re looking to refine your existing skills or embrace new techniques, this workshop offers a supportive space to expand your artistic approach and expression.
In addition to exploring your creativity and developing your painting skills, you'll also experience a weekend making memories, meeting new friends, and basking in the incredible beauty of Radium Hot Springs and the Columbia Valley.
