Sheila practices daily journaling, which has guided her artistic journey over the years. Recently retired from teaching adult art classes, she enjoyed sharing her expertise with others.
Most days, Sheila can be found working in her studio, which opens its doors several times a year for art enthusiasts to visit.
Artist Statement
Working in acrylics and mixed media, Sheila's builds layers with transparent mediums. Bold expressive marks fill the canvas with broad shapes of autumn leaves, distant trees, mountains, all part of nature. Brush marks can come out as an explosion of ideas, sketched or written; expelled into the process of creating. An accumulation of knowledge through experimenting, journalism and creating cultivates a measure of influence that is defined as individuality.
My art is not about perfection; as nature is not perfect but there is a sense of truth and balance in the structure and the application of the paint. Fundamental principles guide techniques in response to what the subject is.
Paints, brushes, lifting, layering transparent to opaque, warm and cool masses, painting positive and negative shapes. The joy is in the process, solving problems until there is nothing more to do; except to start another painting.
